Defeating the voice of discouragement

Written by Dorina Betz

Did you hear that? That voice purring “Just give it up.” ? I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s heard that sweet-sour voice. It is the voice of discouragement, popping up in our minds over and over again, trying to convince us  “It is not worth it.” “It won’t have any impact.”

If you’ve ever been short before giving up, you know what I mean. You are investing into that family but instead of any improvement, their situation just seems to get even worse. Or you’re praying for a family members for years but nothing seems to change. Or you’re trying to reach out to your friends but somehow they do not seem to get the message of God’s love. Or you’re starting a project and nothing works out.

Anyone investing into the kingdom of God will come to this point in life of hearing that voice of discouragement. In times of no visible results we can easily be tempted and quickly start to believe these lies.

But what we need to know is that there’s always a counter voice. Always. Even in the darkest valley of greatest discouragement.

THE VOICE OF TRUTH TELLS US DIFFERENT STORY.

And the good news is that we can choose to believe this voice instead of falling for the voice of discouragement. It is the voice of our loving father whose truth is so much more powerful than every lie Satan is whispering into our ears. God’s voice of truth is always there to encourage us, motivate us and cheer on us in what we do.

But we need to stand on these truths. Our task is to take God and his word seriously. For he didn’t say all these statements in the bible for fun. HE means what HE says and He definitely still means it today.

Instead of listening to the voice of discouragement we should look into the bible and focus on the encouragement God is giving us through his word:

“Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” -1. Corinthians 15:58-

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” – Joshua 1:9-

“Do not fear, Zion; do not let your hands hang limp. The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.” -Zephanja 3:17-

Let verses like this become reality in your life, helping you to defeat the voice of discouragement and motivating you to keep going even when you can’t see any result. Yet.
